The Story of “Lighting Masterclass”
Assalamualaikum all. Last month I was able to join a LIghting Masterclass by Acai Foto. held at Ambiance Studio near Kg Melayu Subang for 3 days. Acai is a 15 year old veteran in photography & videography industry. He is an expert in lighting setup for movies & still photos.
Only 3 brave guys joined the class. me, Wan (Lyanglarhat) & Sam (Dinictis). Wan is a teacher while Sam works for a schoolbook publisher. Only me is a fulltime photographer.
Acai started with bsic Zone system, lighting ratio, studio equipments, light modifier & camera settings.
A lightmeter is a photographer’s best friend
We started with Rembrandt style lighting
And this is the result, here is Wan with his macho guy pose
We also did Butterfly lighting, and I’m the impromptu model
Lastly we did a bit on product shoot. here is Acai’s film Mamiya
Acai starts with medium format camera appreciation. We learned how to load up the film
For the second day, we had a model (which I already forgot the name hehehe). Here we setup for butterfly lighting. The big reflectors act as light cutter (cutting out stray lights)
And the actual shot using the model
My fav (we had to rotate the job of holding a big fan in front of her)
A close up shot
And a silhouette shot
These 2 pics were taken using a very big octagon softbox (placed behind the model)
And me in action using the medium format
Our second task is shooting products of our choosing.
Sam choose a bottle of non alcoholic (Halal) Beer
Each of us took a minimum of 1 1/4 hours just to setup the lights…talk about long hours..huh
This is what it looks like in the medium format camera viewfinder…
For me I choose a bottle of Sparkling Juice.. nearly 1 1/2 hours yield me these results (in chronological order of test shooting)
That’s the basic setting with a big softbox from the left side, lightcutters on the right. Then I added background light (with CTO gel)
Fine tune more… and pour the drink!
It was really an eye opener learning from someone who had done so much. Acai had the experience and the patience to teach us. Hope to add more courses next year! Learn max!
